The main goal of the communication management within the Cluster of Excellence Munich-Centre for Advanced Photonics (MAP) is to anchor laser technology in particular and science in general along with their importance for Germany’s future in public awareness. Our focus is on the internal communication to students and scientists of the cluster as well as on the external communication to various audiences: Pupils, students, teachers, scientifically interested but non-specialist citizens, journalists, politicians, representatives from both business and academia as well as further multipliers.
The target of these activities is most inhomogeneous and hence we developed a range of activities to meet the desire of as many interested laypersons as possible: We regularly actively participate in “Open Door” and “Science Night” events of the Garching Research Campus, in international trade fairs such as “World of Photonics” (Munich/Shanghai), “Wissenswerte” or “Münchner Wissenschaftstage” and organize public talks of MAP-scientists including some of the always-sold-out “Evening Lectures to Everyone” in the German Museum, or lab visits for students and pupils from all over Europe. Our photo exhibition has been shown at several places in Munich (Klinikum Großhadern, LMU, Campus Garching) and Berlin (Federal Ministry for Education and Research, BMBF).
A strong focus lies on our high school outreach programme and our student lab PhotonLab at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ). We inform journalists and the public in our regular newsletter and our press releases. Furthermore, we offer an updated overview on the latest publications within the Cluster of Excellence.
