"Thomas Bortfeld has been elected as in his capacity as one of the leading medical physicists who on his most remarkable professional track stimulated for new developments in radiotherapy all time. Since his pioneering work on dose optimization with fluence modulated photon beams in the early 90ies he is considered one of the inventors and pacemakers of the IMRT technique which revolutionized radiotherapy as one of the most efficient therapy modalities in cancer treatment.
Stations along his career were DKFZ/Heidelberg, MDACC/Houston and Harvard Medical School where he currently holds the position of a Full Professor and Director of Physics Research at the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center, one of the first proton radiotherapy centers worldwide. Thomas Bortfeld is an internationally highly reputed expert in hadrontherapy. Due to his experience as referee in NIH/NCI granted projects his role as Member of the MAP Scientific Committee is greatly appreciated." (Fridtjof Nüsslin)
